FUKUBORI — Railway Jacket

Based on the nappa-fuku — the work jacket of the Japanese National Railways, and one of the origins of Japanese workwear.

Not a celebration of age for its own sake, but a question: how do you carry the beauty of straight lines at the core of that garment into everyday life today? FUKUBORI's answer was a 20/2 high-twist twill, woven in the Nishiwaki region. Rather than reaching for the earthy, grounded character of Bingo textiles, we deliberately chose something sharp and cool — editing the particular ungainliness of the nappa-fuku into a tension that reads as contemporary.

Seven sleeve tucks. 0.6cm topstitching. The traces of efficiency and safety demanded by the workplaces of that era were read one by one, and only the functional beauty that carried meaning was kept. A garment that gives form to the straightforwardness once held by Japanese industrial clothing.
